"Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards." ​

 

As the author behind one of Western philosophy’s most astute observations on human nature, Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard lays out quite a profound argument: we are always arriving at clarity too late, always making sense of things in the rearview mirror, while the road ahead demands our full attention. ​

 

Two millennia earlier and a world away, Confucius offered something that almost reads like a reply: 温故而知新. To know the new, one ought to review the old. While Kierkegaard sees the backwards gaze as an irony of human existence, an innate limitation that one cannot escape, Confucius reframes it as a discipline. The growing distance between past and present is not, contrary to popular belief, a source of tragedy. It is the source of knowledge. ​

 

This reframing is what BEIMUN Jr. is built upon. Indeed, the issues in this year’s committees may be new and unprecedented, whether it be dealing with the environmental impacts of artificial intelligence or the devastating civil wars in Sudan; however, the human patterns driving them remain constant. Therefore, engaging effectively with these issues entails not only first making sense of what is happening, but also why: the precedents, the accrued costs, and the unsuccessful prior attempts. ​

 

The past is not a prelude to be skipped. It is a text to be perused carefully. This also applies to the delegates preparing for BEIMUN Jr. Some of you have debated before. Some of you have written clauses that felt airtight until they were not, represented positions you had to understand through extensive research, lost arguments that taught you more than your victories did. BEIMUN Jr. invites you to bring all of that back into the room. Perhaps not as habit, but as material. Review with what you know. Then, renew how you use it. ​

 

We may never escape the backward gaze, like Kierkegaard argues. But Confucius asks us to stop trying altogether. Instead, embrace it. Make it into something.
